EAN-8 at a glance

  • 8 digits: GS1-8 prefix, item reference and a mod-10 check digit.
  • Nominal size is only 26.73 × 21.31 mm.
  • GS1 assigns EAN-8 numbers separately and sparingly, because the number range is small.
  • Use it only when EAN-13 at 80% magnification does not fit on the packaging.

Frequently asked questions

Is EAN-8 just a shortened EAN-13?
No. It is a separate number range; you cannot derive an EAN-8 from your EAN-13 by dropping digits.
Do all checkout scanners read EAN-8?
Yes, EAN-8 is part of the retail standard and read everywhere EAN-13 is.
When should I not use EAN-8?
Whenever an EAN-13 fits. GS1 treats EAN-8 as the exception for very small packaging.
