- Encodes exactly 14 digits – a GTIN-14 including its mod-10 check digit.
- Digits are encoded in pairs, so the length must always be even.
- The bearer bar frame protects the code against ink spread on cardboard.
- Typical print size is 50–100% of the nominal symbol, with a minimum bar width around 0.495 mm on corrugated board.

Frequently asked questions
- Can an ITF-14 be scanned at the checkout?
- No. Retail point of sale uses EAN-13 or UPC-A. ITF-14 is meant for warehouse and logistics scanning of outer packaging.
- Why does my ITF-14 not scan?
- Most failures come from printing too small, missing the light quiet zone left and right, or from a wrong check digit. Print from the SVG whenever possible.
- Do I need bearer bars?
- For direct printing on corrugated board GS1 requires them; the generator includes them by default.
