The brackets are only notation for humans and for the generator. They are not encoded in the barcode itself.

GS1-128 or ITF-14 on a carton?

ITF-14 carries only the GTIN. As soon as batch, weight or expiry date must travel with the item, use GS1-128.

The Serial Shipping Container Code (00) uniquely identifies one logistics unit – typically one pallet – over its whole journey.

Common application identifiers

(01) GTIN of the trade item, 14 digits.
(10) batch or lot number, up to 20 characters.
(17) expiry date in YYMMDD format.
(21) serial number · (37) count of items · (00) SSCC pallet number.
